This is the earliest Jane adaptation that I could find streaming, though I don’t think it’s the first film version ever made. Melodramatic and silly, Jane too pretty and saucy, Adele not French, Rochester a cypher, St. John et al essentially absent. Good fire effects for the time, and I kind of liked having Blanche herself interrupt the wedding. Pilot was some kind of leggy hound, unacceptable.
Repugnant right-wing porn from a ridiculously overhyped director. This is even slower than Bone Tomahawk, plus it has added racism. The audience is supposed to side with Vaughn’s character, a drug runner who won’t let his wife touch kitchen implements lest she injure his unborn baby. Yes, the conservative fetishization of the fetus means that Vaughn’s “Countdown To The Baby” character can do no wrong! This movie is an endless pile of self-indulgent garbage. It's shot after shot after shot of Kristen Stewart texting and riding trains and motor biking for no payoff at all. I don't think Assayas had the faintest idea of what he really wanted to say. And that he thinks every frame he shoots has to be in the final cut. Especially if it's a frame of Kristen Stewart riding that goddamn motorbike AGAIN.
