Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ★★★★½

James Gunn 4

Gunn’s emotional hangout movie about family. The only time the MCU wasn’t overly concerned with plot and the shared universe at large.

I think I’m finally ready to call this better than the first one. It still has its pacing issues (particularly in the back half) and some of the dialogue is a little on the nose in places. That being said, these issues don’t bug me as much as they used to.

The best direction of the franchise with beautiful colors, meaningful blocking, and dynamics that actually feel like something outside of a Linklater movie. (My mans done put a North by Northwest reference in the GOTG series.)

But, I think most importantly, the film is just weird. I think that’s why I love James Gunn. He just jumps into films (the BTS on his films look supremely fun) and creates some weird shit along the way that feels amazingly personal.

That Cat Stevens song really worked wonders on my tear ducts this time.
