I originally saw this in the cinema over three years ago, and whilst I thought it great, I very quickly forgot it and never revisited it. But I finally came back to it and, well this may be even better than the first. The masterstroke here is how small the film is in scope and scale, giving us a superhero film that is still rife with action, thrill, and high stakes, but barely leaves its small bubble. The characters are the real focus here, and there’s genuinely strong character development for many of them that makes the experience so much more emotionally rich than I expected it to be. It’s almost a rejection of the standard superhero narrative, favouring the intimacy and growth that develops with the characters. I’m not head over heels for the final third, when it does find itself unravelling amidst larger threats, but it still manages to pack the punches it’s been building up for the entirety of its runtime. I left it feeling like I’d watched a finely crafted drama instead of a bombastic superhero thriller, and I admire it so much I for that.

Also it’s funny.
