Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ★★★★½

I attribute so much negativity towards this movie. The sequels it spawned were absolute garbage. The trend it ignited in Disney to push live-action properties such as Prince Of Persia, John Carter or the Lone Ranger, all of which bombed in a fascinating display, and finally the high point of Johnny Depp’s career, a moment which he’d never be able to amount to again as he spectacularly fell from grace in the years after.
It’s not surprising I often forget just how much of a damn good movie Pirates Of The Caribbean actually was. Almost perfect in the most magical of ways, this swashbuckling adventure is ripe for all ages, dabbling in cheesy fun, a little horror, supernatural themes, and loads of great action set pieces. Visually it’s something to marvel at, with just the right amount of CGI, and all the massive practical effects you would expect. The huge ships look incredible whether they’re churning through the open seas, or charging into battle.
Casting wise, for at least this instalment in the franchise, they had it on point. Depp’s Jack Sparrow is at his best here, calculating, witty, and not without the added bonus of always having that Jack Sparrow luck on his side. He’s a character you can get behind and root for, all the while Orlando Bloom and Kira Knightly do the best with what they've got to work with, though neither are really given anything to rais them from Depp’s shadow this time around. The stand out for me, not just in this film, but basically, the entire series was Jeffrey Rush. As Barbossa, you can tell he's having a lot of fun in the role and has the advantage of boasting the best dialogue throughout.
All in all, there's loads of fun to be had with Pirates of the Caribbean. It's a thrill ride, but also maintains a lot of heart and charm. The romance is sweet and the humour lands more often than not. It's always a pleasant experience revisiting this one.
