I think when people say phantasmagoric this is basically what they mean. Also, despite this dipping slightly more toward horror-camp, the deaths in this film are genuinely tragic. It’s so rare that a slasher film has an entire cast that you genuinely hurt for when they die. Freddy using their ambitions/dreams - the very things they’re holding onto as they’re victimized by these institutions - against them is all the more nasty.
