Old ★★★★

A great COVID-era genre film in the sense that most of its horror comes not from bodily decay but the desperation of knowing that life is rapidly passing you by as you remain trapped in a single location for an indefinite period of time – not to mention the anguish of seeing your loved ones struggling with a new reality that you're hopelessly ill-equipped to help them deal with.

This doesn't pack the emotional wallop of The Village (my fave Shyamalan), but it's relentlessly paced, surprisingly funny, and visually dazzling, with striking compositions and inventive camerawork including dizzying 360 pans and tracking shots.

A perfect piece of popcorn entertainment to return to cinemas with after Melbourne's fifth fucking lockdown.
