Like many of Reichardt's films this is a potent reminder of how truly precarious life can be – this time, set in an era where a man can be killed for disobeying his employer or for stealing something as small as a few cups of milk. While there are lovely moments of warmth and friendship in this film what I'll remember most about it is the sense of dread and inevitability hanging over everything, and the sickening callousness of wealthy men talking about the best way to punish those whose work has made them rich. A real gut punch.
