Knives Out

Knives Out

Certainly won't fail to deliver on the entertainment side of things. Knives Out is one of the best whodunits I've seen, and it's because of Rian Johnson's wicked, goofy style - I love Rian and his work, though totally American, is really fucking strong from his debut Brick to now this at 2019. This is his best work yet, his most grounded despite the quirky comedy from literally every character - each character is different from one another and yes they are not written to perfection and are helped an awful lot by a great casting decision, the actors are brilliant, but what matters for a film like this is the final result...and each character comes to life in the final edit, without a doubt. Speaking of the actors though, I have to mention Ana de Armas. She is the standout and just totally fantastic - this is her big moment in the industry, she's proven herself in this movie after a lot of more minor and supporting roles in big movies lately but after this, she's gonna be flooded with offers - I just pray she accepts all the good scripts and not get too money-driven with her film choices. Also, Daniel Craig is totally amusing from his first line to his last.

What I just love about this is it really is at the peak of Hollywood's style. There's nothing foreign about this, it's totally plot-driven, utterly theatrical (music score and cinematography especially), super glossy and just to top it all of, it literally stars a bunch of very recognisable Hollywood stars, some who've been around for a while and some who are more modern with their stardom - Knives Out still manages to be something fresh though, fresh like a donut, a donut with a hole in the middle.
