Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island ★★½

Better than expected but still super flawed. Its all the Kong movies dumbed down into a childrens film. A better remake of JURASSIC PARK than JURASSIC WORLD. The director for hire was marvelous. Its the script content I hated.

First, how is a 70s Kong story necessary or interesting when we have a 70s Kong movie? Especially when it has no real interest in the authentic 1970s? I doubt soldiers were listening to David Bowie and Iggy Pop sing about fucking drag queens while they were fighting.

The film makes sure we associate Nixon with Trump because Russiagate was still big. Whatever. But then it does the liberal fuckery of selling racial unity, calling attention to race silently in a movie not about racism but a super gorilla. Literally none of the Kong movies do that. Worse you got Samuel L Jackson as a black colonel with a personal vendetta vs Kong, because ya know they're linked. Fuck me.

John C Reilly was the only likable character because he obviously rewrote his lines. Like every big movie of the last 15 years, we have a British leading man explaining morality to us. Superman is British. Two Batman are English. Spider-man AND Venom. Tom Hiddleston is not a draw or a name or even attractive or a good actor. But its imperitative that these big global blockbusters sell British white men as the face of humanity.

The CGI was good. The cinematography and camerawork were good. 30 minutes too long. I hope this director gets to work on non-shit.
