Hamilton 2020
When tickets are selling for upwards of $700, you have to know your audience. Lin Manuel Miranda did. His decision to smooth over the slavery issue is a fascinating one for a number of reasons, most notably that he claims the musical is based on Chernow's (a conservative historian who leans heavily on the "great men of history" angle) book, "Hamilton", in which even Chernow concedes that it is likely Hamilton owned at least two house slaves. Mississippi Masala 1991
every movie about diasporic families essentially boils down to the same thing; the kids know that assimilation whips ass, the parents are stuck in their ways, and tradition must be shirked in order to achieve "progress", whether that be social, economic, governmental, etc. Progress is of course a dialectical nonstarter; that things can even appear "status quo" is catastrophe, and it is catastrophe which is required for progress - an abstracted project, a never ending march towards perfection. But the baby hand on the face at the very end of this earns it four stars
