Farewell, Bob: a look at the work of Mr Hoskins

Just came in from work to the incredibly sad news of the passing of a genuinely great British actor, Bob Hoskins. I don't usually feel this way when celebrities pass, but it seems so soon after his retirement on health grounds.

Bob Hoskins was one of those rare actors who could be funny as well as menacing, and who could also turn on the charm when the role required it. In interviews and personal appearances he never seemed like a performer who had an edge or an ego, he just got on with the job.

At the time he retired I felt he would be very much missed from our screens. Now he has left us we can feel that loss even more. RIP Bob.

Here's a selection of my favourites of his performances. I'd also add his episode of The Last Word Monologues from 2008.
