The Elephant Man does not *touch* the core of uniquely human compassion--it scrapes it raw and chews it up, swishes it around in its astringent saliva, and spits it back out at oneself.
but, it matches its uniquely human compassion with uniquely human evil. it is a concentrate of unjust misfortune, something intolerably painful to experience secondhand momentarily, let alone for the length of a feature-length film.
