Only You 1994
Only You spends about 45 minutes just taxiing to the runway, then another 30 waiting to take off. The pilot informs the passengers of a mechanical issue and returns to the jet bridge where everyone de-boards and waits for the next plane. By the time the issue is sorted out, the vacation feels more like a sapping errand than a romantic mission to Venice.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire 2013
There's two things I like about this series that I think is interesting for such a largely successful book series.
1: The focus on the mental fallout on the winners of the games, and how the violence lives with them the rest of their lives. At the end of the first movie, Peeta asks Katniss, "what do we do now?" and she responds, "try to forget." But here we see how impossible that is, as night terrors wake her screaming,…

Sing Street 2016
Genuinely great original songs in this earnest feel-good movie about 80's Irish teens forming a school band who do NOT make it big, but nevertheless do make something special together, for a time. Sing Street takes a little while to get rolling, but once Conor makes a friend (who takes pity on him for being bullied SO hard in his new school) and then gets the idea to form a band, the movie really takes off. Never really got into…

Tiffany the Doll 2022
You know how when a dead body is on screen for a long time and you secretly watch to see if they'll breathe? What if the dead body was openly breathing and a character aknowledged it while improvising his lines...
That's Tiffany the Doll in a nutshell.
The sets don't make sense. Homes are shot in hotels, bars are set in assembly halls, and everything else is in a sex shop. Day and night are irrelevant. Going to work means…

Triggered 2020
Sometimes you just want to see annoying nondescript 20-somethings with a Grantland / Ringer-level understanding of pop culture (& the unfortunate habit of sharing that knowledge) get wrapped up in a silly most-dangerous-game riff that involves bomb vests, a winner-take-all “game” mechanic, and the airing out of all their high-school-era dirty laundry. & while this is by no means good, there are fleeting moments — one in particular, involving a double-triple-cross and a choice punchline — where this Saw-meets-Scream thing actually…

Kramer vs. Kramer 1979
Néstor Almendros saves this melodrama by lighting it like a Truffaut film with as much plain lighting as possible. He carefully unobstructs the story. In that way, I wish more cinematographers were like Almendros, knowing when not to get in the aesthetic way. His commitment to the pedestrian shooting punctuates the naturalism making Hoffmann and Streep's over-acting seem a bit less stodgy.
But make no mistake, this is a vanity project for the two actors. Hoffman practically salivates for the…

Best Friend 2023
Middle class Drake goes on an incel rampage.
BOY DID THEY RENT A DOLLY!!! Almost very single shot uses a dolly. None of this makes sense. This is not best friend behavior; unless they best fiends AND MARRIED! What the hell is this? I do not understand this “pitch” that happened. It was like aliens watched humans and decided to make a movie. Did anyone else have a real hard time to follow the time in this movie?
*30 mins…
