This is a film that has an awful lot to say, and yet it frequently gets reduced to one simple title. To the general public, or at least the small percentage of people which have actually heard of it, The Master has been commonly referred to as "The Scientology Movie." I've heard it on several occasions and, of course, I understand why it receives that title. Whether it be the obvious parallels to Scientology or the tabloid attention the film…

I liked the grocery store sequence a lot more than the rest of the movie, they felt like two disparate things tonally, at least to me. The first eighty minutes or so felt like a comedy to me with horror elements and direct moments taken from Scream, IT, It Follows, and more and I like all of those things but this felt very derivative rather than inspired by them. It takes a simple and enticing premise and squeezes out every last possible ounce of fun and it's wonderful. I really like most of the cast, Stevens, Monroe, and Reddick in particular. The action is exciting but I've always seen it as more of a dark comedic thriller than anything. A dark comedy with incredible music & cinematography that has yet to lose any of its charm through at least four viewings.
