Not my favorite Hitchcock, but largely because the source material was so unwieldy that any attempt to distill it into a two hour feature would be a struggle. Even so, he crams this movie with twists and turns and psychological fuckery, proving that suspense always was his strong suit.

I don't fall for cinematic spectacle all too often, and as a die-hard Lynch-lady (trademarking that one), I didn't anticipate finding this movie unique, entertaining or remotely necessary. But this proved me entirely wrong. When I say this was a cinematic marvel, I mean I literally couldn't get my jaw off the floor. An absolute show-stopper of grand aesthetic scope, absorbing narrative, and pitch perfect performances. It ain't Lynch, but it blessedly doesn't even try to be. This is a distinct masterpiece that loves its source material and brought it to life near-perfectly.

Absolutely believe the hype. I don't casually throw around the term Masterpiece, but this fits the bill and then some. The filmmaking feels both impeccably controlled and energetically spontaneous- dizzying, poetic, and meaningful in every frame. The story is both timely and classic, heartbreaking and hopeful. Jenkins infuses his beautiful images and complicated characters with more heart and understanding than most filmmakers could ever muster. Gorgeous to look at and intense to experience, this is one you definitely cannot miss.
