Cinema is really cool, ain’t no doubt about it!
A fairly by the books tale of revenge which is executed wonderfully by Eggers. Though it is pretty straightforward the film does go in some pretty unexpected directions at various points to add a sense of tension to the narrative. I went in expecting a fair bit of action but really enjoyed a lot of the downtime present in the film.
I do think it lacks a bit of the depth from Eggers’ other films, which could likely be because of the story the film is trying to tell, but I still appreciate what the film is able to do, especially with its technical aspects.
Kurosawa’s uncompromising vision still shines through with this TV film, and though it falters at times (particularly with its second act) it’s great to see how he can make normalcy feel scary.
Love that Kurosawa also gets the viewer acquainted with silence, only to shock them with a sudden jolt of sound. Great stuff!
