Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Portrait of a Lady on Fire ★★★

All the bad clichés of forbidden love had me rolling my eyes big time. I wished there were more subtle ways to portray longing, than what Céline Sciamma offers us. Actually, I know there is and it’s a shame she doesn’t find them. Instead we are left with glimpses of greatness, the bonfire scene, the scenes by the sea, the scenes around the kitchen table, tainted by the grotesque embrace by the beach “Forgive me” she said *eye roll*.

And that ending my god, I understand we are trying to get the audience to cry but boy is it cliché. I want to love this yet like Carol, I find it oh so hard.
