Tar is a hilarious mockery of a collection of egotistical pretentious academics that is played completely straight. The entire movie is, unbeknownst to the viewer, building up to an excellently crafted punchline (at Tar’s expense). Yet Tar’s lesbianism felt unnecessary or, at the very least, not as relevant to the story as one might expect given the underlying social commentary the direct was making.
