Lethal Weapon 2 abandons most of the heart that made the first movie work so well in favor of something far more heightened. From the opening car chase filled with car stunts and explosions, the film doesn't let up in delivering insane action set pieces until the very end. In his first solo work, Joel Coen infused his retelling of Macbeth with an avant-garde, German expressionist-inspired look and atmosphere. The look of the film gives it an almost otherworldly quality. Each performance works incredibly well, with confident line deliveries that deliver Shakespeare's dialogue with enough vigor to make this story work onscreen. Shakespeare's dialogue still alienates me and keeps me from being wholly invested in this story. But for what it is, this is a bold solo effort from Joel Coen.
