May December 2023
Haynes back in his wheelhouse of the banal horror of American suburban life. Obviously Moore and Portman are fantastic, but Melton, what a performance. Genuine leading man potential with him. Overall, one of the best films of the year for me. Shades of Haynes’ earlier work like Superstar and Safe, but also a lot of Haneke like sterility in my opinion. Him being in the South adds an interesting dimension to this one as well. Also why the hell is there so much baseball in this movie?

Captain Ahab: The Story of Dave Stieb 2022
I genuinely believe Jon Bois is one of the greatest filmmakers of the 21st century. The fact that all of his work is available for free online is insane. He has never made a documentary that was not excellent. I think there’s a lot of “ugh you watch sportsball” people out there, and for good reason, sports fandom can be incredibly toxic. If anyone wants to know why you should watch sports just watch a Jon Bois documentary. The best documentarian working today.

The History of the Minnesota Vikings 2023
Jon Bois going full Haneke with the end of episode 4. If the Mariners were beauty, and the Falcons were comedy, the Vikings are pure horror, reduced to ashes from a once great franchise, destined to repeat the same hell in a frozen arctic tundra until the sun dies out. Pair this one when it’s done with Kopple’s American Dream.
