Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island ★★★★

One of the most surprisingly satisfying big-budget sure-to-be-blockbusters I've seen in ages. Skull Island doesn't really attempt to go toe-to-toe with the epochal 1933 original—or any other iteration for that matter—but the weighty action and sense of wonder it inspires is often nothing short of exhilarating. Coursing beneath the surface, however, a solid and resonant (if occasionally a little too on-the-nose) anti-imperialist throughline ensures that the monster’s subtextual mythos is retained and re-appropriated, preventing it from descending into mere hollow spectacle.
