Chasing Amy

Chasing Amy ★★★★★

Though it retains his typically observed dialogue and raunchy hysterics, Kevin Smith's opus is, above all, a powerful and heartbreaking insight into male sexual insecurity and relationship tribulations. Unlike 99.9% of cinematic romances, this one cuts a lot deeper by approaching falling in love as the scary, deadly serious prospect it truly is - the kind of business in which, as Ebert said it best, "your entire being is at risk". Accordingly, Holden's verbose in-car confession to Alyssa is about as real and relatable as such a scene gets for me. I used to think I had issues with Chasing Amy's final act. The truth, I've since realised, is that I just do not want it to end.
