Liam Fitzgibbon’s review published on Letterboxd:
Obviously this isn’t all a raging success, but I do think relocating Death Note’s plot to America adds some surprisingly compelling subtext about self-righteousness and the ignorance of privilege. The last 30 minutes or so is when the film’s at its peak, essentially morphing into The Guest 2, complete with neon lit chase scenes and 80’s needle drops.
The weight of setting up an entire TV show’s story in 101 minutes obviously makes for a bit of a bumpy ride, but once the wheels are in motion Wingard gets to have a lot more fun with it. I’d love to see him helm a more fleshed out, cat & mouse focused sequel one day.
