Come for Julianne Moore's disturbingly manipulative abuser, stay for Natalie Portman's borderline-sociopathic bad actress, leave thinking about Charles Melton's broken boy in a man's body, finally realizing that he was a victim the whole time. Todd Haynes is the only modern filmmaker making old-fashioned movies (i.e. meticulously crafted melodramas) and I mean that in a good way.

As stupid as you'd expect from an attempt at a class satire written and directed by someone whose dad went to Eton. As with Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell seems convinced that she's doing something oh-so-shocking, but it's all much more silly than it is subversive - especially when you've already seen Teorema and The Talented Mr. Ripley (especially Teorema).
