Under the Silver Lake

Under the Silver Lake ★★★★

Very surprised at all the hate this received. A little heavy-handed but it's a real joy to finally watch an original neo-noir that doesn't feel pandering. Director David Robert Mitchell, DP Mike Gioulakis, and composer Disasterpiece make a fantastic trio. Their film looks gorgeous and I was seriously wowed by the soundtrack. Many, many films take place in L.A. but this captures a distinct time and place that others fail to do. Even its dreamlike moments remind me of Malick or Fellini's ability to ground surreality through the spirit of its setting.
