Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Portrait of a Lady on Fire ★★★★★

I find it hard to find words which would do justice to the sumptuous beauty of Le portrait de la jeune fille en feu. The fact that Céline Sciamma's latest movie only got released today here instead of having a limited release in December was both a blessing and a curse. While I was frustrated with having to wait for quite a while, it allowed me to explore the rest of her filmography and I think it only made me appreciate her newest work even more. I feel like Portrait is so much different from her other films. It feels bigger in scope although it never lose itself and remains at its core, quite minimalist. Beautiful performances. Restricted direction. Elegant cinematography (every scene near the beach is to die for). And last but not least, forbidden love. Quite the cinematic achievement if you ask me.
