Why Don't You Play in Hell?

Holy shit. Holy FUCKING shit! For the first hour this is a simple, quite well made, yakuza movie, but then it just goes banana shit crazy and become one of the most absurd, craziest, wildest, funniest movie I've ever seen. Holy bananas! Sion Sono is one crazy guy. I can't get over how the last hour of this movie is crazy, no; INSANE!!!!!!!! Not often will I have on big smile over my face for the entirety of a movie.鈥

I actually stumbled upon Mario Bava鈥檚 Blood and Black Lace during a Letterboxd challenge two years ago. I had picked the film myself but solely based upon the poster and its far superior English title. I had no expectations whatsoever going into the film pretty blind and was pleasantly surprised. Ever since it鈥檚 like it never left my mind. I would think about it often, telling myself I should rewatch it. I finally did and it remains as elegant as鈥

I find it hard to believe one comes out of The Haunting unimpressed. From a purely technical point of view, the film simply stands out. Each scene seems to be meticulously thought; whether it鈥檚 in the blocking, the framing, or the use of great camera tricks. The gorgeous black and white cinematography is another stand-out here, it just has a really unique look to it. As for the film itself, I found myself fully invested right from the opening; it鈥

Y'all are probably gonna hate this so much.

I feel bad, not for doubting von Trier; before even viewing I thought it would be terrific. That being said, I thought it would only be a gore fest, pretty much nothing else. I think it was really stupid of me to think that this what von Trier would offer. I won't lie, it's violent, really violent, but it's so much more than that. At its core it feels deeply philosophical. It's鈥

Moonlight is another of those movies I would say is more of an experience than a movie. In a way, Moonlight is life itself; life at its hardest. Everyone can relate to Chiron, some more than others that's sure; but one way or an other, you relate to him. Whether by being a victim of bullying, growing in a difficult environment or just simply trying to fit in; trying to know who you really are. Life. This experience is simply鈥
