In the upside down world of this film, violence and nihilistic cruelty run rampant, in a hysterically brutal expressionist labyrinth. One where nothing makes sense and countless lives are lost in the name of a whatsit. The fatalistic cynicism which defines film noir (informed by Cold War era paranoia) is taken to its logical conclusion, once that Pandora’s box was opened a nuclear apocalypse seemed inevitable. Here the sense of finality is palpable, in a way that it isn’t in any other apocalyptic film I’ve ever seen.

“He’s sincere” is the most important line in the film, it’s why Plato and Judy are drawn to Jim Stark and why the film has such emotional resonance. Of course some people will perceive the film as too far fetched and melodramatic, but it’s the forceful earnestness which makes the film work.

It’s a teen melodrama blown up in CinemaScope imbuing every moment with a sense of cosmic significance. From the boisterous scenes like the knife fight and game of…

A thematically and emotionally complex love story told in a oneiric style that recalls Von Sternberg (in both its visual richness and how frankly sensual it is) much more than the typical Capracorn. Really startling in its handling of the clash between eastern and western values, and especially in the stunning dream sequence which is singular in its greatness and probably the standout scene in Capra’s oeuvre. Interesting to see how different his career would likely have been had this film not failed and without the introduction of the Hays Code which came so soon after.

I was already predisposed to disliking this movie cause it’s based on slanderous bullshit-fuck Pauline Kael- and I wasn’t sold on Fincher doing this material justice based on the interviews he had given. He’s certainly a talented filmmaker, but you couldn’t really tell based on this completely uninspired super dull stuff. Instantly forgettable, which means this is probably Fincher’s best chances at an Oscar.
