This is a horror film. I know it sounds like a counterproductive statement, but it's true. This has everything that makes a horror film a masterpiece of its genre. Demonstrating a step-up in artistic maturity from both Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone, Once Upon a Time in the West tells a grand, epic and human story that is easy to get confused by, but hard to not be engaged with. It's beautifully written, greatly acted, masterfully scored and powerfully directed, with a visual language that is stronger than that of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. I'm guessing time will make me appreciate this even more. This film begs to be seen more than once.
