Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ★★★½

Eh. What can I say? It's a fun swashbuckler flick. I know that thousand of people don't like it, but I had a good time and that's more than I can say for some other films from the same year.

The acting was very poor, especially from Keira Knightly and, as Mark Kermode put it, "Orloondo Bland". Their lack of chemistry is definitely the worst part of the film. The only actor who I felt really put effort into his role was Geoffrey Rush, who spread his ham along the full length of the keel.

On the other hand, the direction was great. The filmmakers knew how to handle nice, comedic flourishes in the action scenes or a well placed slow motion shot for atmosphere. Gore Verbinski did a very fine job with this one; I dare say he's talented (which makes the reception to A Cure for Wellness all the more disappointing, especially because his name was all over the ads that I saw preceded by the words 'visionary director').
