I declared this Hosoda’s best work midway through. It’s probably not, both Summer Wars and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time better capture Hosoda’s thesis. Still, the technical highs in this are absolutely stunning; the CG work is impressively gorgeous and, as always, the flat bright colors of the standard animation work extremely well.
This tugged at my heart strings quite a bit, but I understand some of the beef with the central mystery’s reveal and subsequent solution. It works…
I’m going to refrain from really talking about this as a film. The AI voice thing is repugnant. Aside from that, there’s nothing filmic or interesting about this as a movie. It would disappoint Tony to see the parade of talking heads; any number of episodes of his various tv shows eclipse this as a formal exercise.
My bigger take away is: man, I miss this guy. I’m angry he’s gone. I don’t buy the pat solution as to why…
