I woke up Monday morning and realized that when I was watching the beginning of this (when they have the three-way tie) there was apparently a NASCAR race going on that had a really close three-way finish with someone winning by like an inch. I just thought that was too crazy of a coincidence not to share.

    Perfect Days

One of those movies that left me without words when I walked out of the theater. This is genuinely the kind of film that could reshape how you approach life. Yet it says so little.

Hirayama just chooses to live his life simply. He takes pleasure in the small things. He doesn’t let negativity dictate his mood. But he still goes through plenty. I want to live my life more like Hirayama. It’s hard for me to act like everything…

Wow I really liked this. I loved the exploration of the idea that you can be doing all the wrong things for genuinely thoughtful reasons. I also like that we explored the idea of making the most of the time you have left with someone at the expense of another. I thought the mom and daughter’s relationship was really interesting. The performances were great, and Woody Harrelson just has a place in my heart.

    Dicks: The Musical

When this trailer came out, I thought it looked like it could be a pretty fun time. I was wrong. I found this obnoxious, unfunny and distasteful. There were glimpses of a story that I enjoyed, and the dialogue/lyrics had their moments, but those moments were too few and far apart. I thought the music in the songs was pretty catchy, but that was about all I got out of the musical aspect of this. The song lyrics were repulsive…

Probably the best animated film I’ve seen in terms of capturing the blockbuster vibe

Genuinely inspiring stuff here. I loved how the camera was constantly moving, making sure I couldn’t get a real good look at anything. I loved how little the actors did and how little they had to work with. The one liners and predictable dialogue made for one of THE scripts of the year. And I loved the bold choice to give no time or attention to the ADR.

    The Taste of Things

I thought this was such an interesting film. What started as a cooking montage with brief dialogue turned into something really insightful and powerful.

Perhaps the driving force of the story was the acting. The performances of Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel was truly great, and their chemistry together was amazing. And the food cinematography brought a lot of quality to the whole work.

While I enjoyed the whole movie, the final 20ish minutes felt genuinely masterful. With what happens…

One thing I realized on this watch was that you can watch this with a ton of brain power invested in it as you work to understand the themes and dense story. Or you can turn your brain off and still have an absolute blast.

I think that boils down to a couple reasons. This is a really deep story with lots to chew on, but the way the story is told makes it easy for any viewer to like.…
