Kyle Bumpers’s review published on Letterboxd:
I’m honestly happy the trailer looked bad so my expectations were lowered, and it was able to be sooo much better than I was expecting. The No Way Home of slashers. The meta commentary was perfect. The horror references were awesome. So many homages and they all absolutely slapped.
Props to the directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who did a great job carrying over the feel of Wes Craven’s films. The performances were all perfect for the slasher genre. Melissa Barrera is perfect. Jenna Ortega was great. Jack Quaid was super contagious with his energy. The score, the camerawork, the style all around was amazing. I specifically loved all the dutch angles and the dolly zoom. Just perfect.
And I got a surprise at the end when the usher was standing around the corner to make me jump after the movie ended. FOR WES!
