Ivan's Childhood

Ivan's Childhood ★★★★½

Have maintained Tarkovsky as the greatest director of all time for a while, but only just got round to watching his debut feature - and I have no reason to change my assessment on the director. Marvellous camerawork; crisp monochrome renders a chiarascuro nightmare of silhouettes and shadows. Searing portrayal of the devastation of war too; need to watch again to dig more into the stuff about Ivan's backstory and his true motives of helping in the war. Also those dream sequences are some of the most convincing and truly "dreamlike" I have seen depicted on film.
