First movie in a walk-in theater since the whole pandemic started. The experience was nice but the film was just alright for me. I'm kind of surprised to see it sit here with a higher rating on Letterboxd than the original.
I like this one and I like the original more, but admittedly, I don't think I like either as much as most people seem to. Maybe it's the genre. I guess creature features aren't really my thing.
This movie is fine, I just found myself burned out on some aspects of it. The idea of needing to stay quiet so the dangerous creature doesn't hear you is nothing new, and basing an entire film around this concept is starting to wear thin with me as well. The first film gets the originality points which dropped off greatly when The Silence came out, and now we find ourselves here where I am even more over the idea. And for some reason the aesthetics of the creatures did nothing for me either. They are of the same ilk as the demogorgons from Stranger Things, another phenomenon I oddly find overrated.
The best part of this film for me was the opening 15 minutes. Origins stories of world-changing events never get old for me and their submission of these creatures bursting into Earth's society was solid.
