"Revenge is for movies."
I Saw the Devil is a fascinating and horrific tale of revenge directed by Kim Jee-woon. Both leads, Lee Byung-hun and Choi-Min-sik, are favorites of mine and are spectacular in their roles...truly sensational. The story is heartwrenching but I found the pace to be almost boring. The moments of nail-biting tension are fantastic and the violence that ensues is sometimes even more impressive because of its realistic appearance.
But here's the thing: for revenge to be done right, it should really involve at least one crazy plot twist. "You wronged me so I'll wrong you back" is the plot of every revenge movie...but there should be something more. Something to add that extra needed bit of intrigue and excitement. That's why Oldboy works so well for me. The plot twist is just fucking insane! I Saw the Devil didn't deliver on that end and for that reason it doesn't go that extra mile. However, I was thoroughly disturbed by the grotesque nature of it and I've seen some gross gory things! Although conflicted, I must say I can appreciate it.
