Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables

As I was growing up, my family and I would watch three-hour TV movies on Sunday afternoons. Those were usually adaptations of classic literature, be it Homer's Odyssey or Robin Hood. I do not know if 1985's Anne of Green Gables was ever screened as part of that program, but watching it today gave me a massive nostalgic feeling.

This is an utterly delightful and faithful adaptation of a tremendous novel, a warm embrace on these cold winter days. Prince Edward Island looks absolutely stunning, making Montgomery's descriptions of Green Gables truly come to life. The cast is terrific, Megan Follows showcases great range as the charmingly melodramatic protagonist, and both Dewhurst and Farnsworth are great grandparent material. Loved it, it really is just like revisiting the book all over again.
