I'm all for strange cinema, but Border is the bad kind of weird. It is seemingly bizarre and unpleasant simply for the sake of being so, and while I have never been accused of prudishness, it feels more than a little tasteless to include the rape of infants as a plot point in a fantasy film about troll people. Ali Abbasi's film is well-photographed, but aside from that, I found nothing much to appreciate, which is disappointing given how much I admire Abbasi's more recent feature, the brutally realistic Holy Spider.
