A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master ★★½

Progressing through the Nightmare on Elm Street series, it now seems safe to declare that quippy, over the top Freddy Krueger is not my jam. The terrifying Freddy of the first film has now been reduced to a groan-inducing wisecrack generator. He is still scary, because he kills people in their fucking dreams, but the silliness taints such an excellent concept. The teen actors in the franchise's fourth installment are atrocious, especially Tuesday Knight, who replaces Patricia Arquette in the role of Kristen. Renny Harlin directs the film well, however, and the effects are first-rate. The waterbed murder and movie theater scene are pulled off rather well, but it is one girl's excruciating transformation into a cockroach that is the stuff of which actual nightmares are made. Overall, The Dream Master has slightly more going for it than its immediate predecessor.
