Ever watched the first 15 minutes of a movie and wondered “how the hell did this get on my watchlist?” Welcome to Human Lanterns. Neither Human Centipede nor Raise the Red Lantern. This is some Chinese cheese. Wait. Is there Chinese cheese?!!! I am so culturally ignorant…but I digress. Oh. Now 30 minutes in. This is the right movie. Human lantern construction underway. One suggestion, do not have a Sergeant “Poon” search for your missing gf!! Overly melodramatic, dance troupe style martial arts, and 4 minutes of horror. Only recommended for lunatic lantern lovers.

Proof again that in simplicity resides the most profound. This was not the oft dazzling art style or wildly mystical tale from Ghibli. The animation fit the pastoral pastels of country life and floral fabrics of fortune. I loved her rejection of cultural norms of female subjugation. Yet fate is a cruel mistress. Heartbreaking and heartwarming, uplifting and sorrowful. A koan of a film. A gentle riddle for the soul.

An outstanding thriller! Not for everyone as it centers on a snuff tape and the sounds and images are quite assaulting. They aren’t gratuitous, just disgusting, but they add a harsh meta-texture to the story line of a student writing her thesis on violence in film. The structure is razor sharp with excellent acting and an anxiety producing score. This is a phenomenal whodunit that gets less viewing than it deserves because of the thematic subject matter. Very much worth the watch! (But not on tape!)

The most sensual film I know. A layered labial labyrinth, softly elegant in the visuals and score. A wanton heat smolders in every frame. Drama, suspense, horror, erotica. Yes. And more. A love story as beautiful and arousing as they come. Female desire and ingenuity escape their imprisonment in the maze of masculinity. With every rewatch, my love for this film deepens.
