It took me nearly the entire runtime to finally realize I was watching a masterpiece. This is a staggering work of human empathy; over-flowing with warmth, but never sentimental. I can't visit Mexico City in 1970, but, thanks to Alfonso, it feels like I have. Remember that famous long take in Children of Men? There are at least three shots in this movie that blow that one out of the water.
