  • Vice

    Vice

    ★★½

McKay mistakenly commits the first half to Cheney's relatively uninteresting life prior to becoming veep, which makes it tough to get to the more compelling second half, but I admire some of the risks McKay took in his filmmaking, though most weren't pulled off.

  • The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

    The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

    ★★★★½

While I throughly enjoyed all of these Western short stories, I'd rank them thusly:

    The Gal Who Got Rattled
    All Gold Canyon
    The Mortal Remains
    The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
    Meal Ticket
    Near Algodones

  • Roma

    Roma

    ★★★★★

A slowly paced and beautifully shot autobiographical family drama with an arresting and heart wrenching final act.

  • The Odd Life of Timothy Green

The Odd Life of Timothy Green

    ★½

This movie is fucking bananas and should not exist.

  • Calibre

    Calibre

    ★★★★

One of the most stressful film watching experiences I can remember and a highly impressive directorial debut.

  • Private Life

    ★★★★

It's baffling that this wasn't written and directed by Noah Baumbach, check this out if you like his films but feel they could be a bit more depressing - this is a genuine recommendation.

  • Borg vs McEnroe

    Borg vs McEnroe

    ★★★½

Some misguided slow-motion and slow zoom choices but overall a great watch for any tennis fans.

  • Flower

    Flower

    ★★½

This movie is such a mess but is still worth it for Zoey Deutch, the most charismatic young actress around.

  • Eighth Grade

    Eighth Grade

    ★★★★★

A brilliant example of how great films allow us to climb into another person's skin as Burnham deftly brings us back to what is arguably the hardest age to be a human.

  • The Killing of a Sacred Deer

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

    ★★★★

Only someone with the name "Yorgos Lanthimos" could think of this fucked up shit (not quite on par with Dogtooth or The Lobster but that's a high bar).

  • Repulsion

    Repulsion

    ★★★★★

If Hitchcock made a film during a mental breakdown.

  • Brigsby Bear

    Brigsby Bear

    ★★★★

The adorable and fuzzy cousin of "Dogtooth"
