Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island ★★★½

I'm all about monster movies so it's really not a hard sell to get me excited about a theatrical visit to King Kong's kaiju-infested home island. Skull Island pretty much does everything well enough in a Fantastic Beasts kind of way where it's OK as a stand-alone movie, but the fact that it serves as a bridge to something bigger is what makes it more compelling. Aside from John C. Reilly, Skull Island doesn't need the rest of it's big-named cast since the characters aren't especially complex or interesting as it's the giant CGI ape who has the deepest backstory and all of the best scenes.
