    ‘The Housemaid’ digs deep into the clichés of passion, cheating, sexism and social inequalities to conclude that nothing can be as simple as a cliché when we talk about men and women.

    This film has one of the most incredible and innovative art directions I’ve ever seen AND it talks capitalism, bourgeoisie and social disparities. My favorite combo: beauty and the beast. 

    Really, it’s amazing how this was made in 1960, when Korea was recovering from a war that divided its own territory, still had a strong presence of the US military and was soon to become a very militarized country in its institutional ranks.

    Hong Kong’s capitalist environment of extreme poverty crammed with extreme wealth is one of the world’s most significant madnesses. This film shows it in the life of a bipolar man who’s just discharged from a mental hospital and is perceived as the source of lunacy in a society of lunatics. 

    The dark, grayish scenarios contour the main character’s torturing soul while he searches for peace when everyone else misjudges his character for a misunderstood disease. Acting was great for both…
