Zodiac ★★★★★

While I loved this movie on first viewing, it wasn't until this rewatch that I realised just how phenomenally good it is. I have no hesitation in saying it's a masterpiece.

Every aspect of this movie is executed to perfection - so much so that I don't even know where to begin with this review. It's one of the most engaging movies I've ever seen which is remarkable considering the fact that at least 90% of it is basically just characters talking. I challenge you to watch this and find one scene that is even remotely boring.

Every moment in this movie has some level of tension, whether it's the masterfully directed murder sequences or simply the thrill of watching these guys getting closer and closer to catching the Zodiac. This movie consumes you. Like our three main characters you become obsessed over this case which is why these are some of the most relatable characters I've ever seen in a movie.

It's of course a chilling and intense movie but Fincher places equal weight on the theme of obsession: how that consumes people's lives and how it effects those around them. I love that these characters' lives completely take a back-seat to the rest of the story. For example, one character will go on a date and then later in the movie suddenly he's married with three children. It's completely glossed over: in most movies that would be a flaw, but in this movie it just showcases Fincher's genius.

I have so much more I can say about this movie but I'm well aware of how bloated this word-spew of a review is becoming so I'll stop here.

Zodiac is one of the greatest movies ever made and if you haven't seen it please check it out. Just be prepared to become completely obsessed with this case when you do.
