Cinematography and music score are masterpieces. Decision to Leave is a thriller version of a mixture of Wong Kar-wai’s 90s works, especially Happy Together and In the Mood for Love, that emphasises the loneliness of each protagonist via incoherent dialogues (and oops, great miss-en-scene in those scenes). It’s great to see Park borrowed here and there a bit, while not losing his own keys.

The re-watch was so worth it.

Park Chan-wook’s latest detective saga appears to be less “clever” than his previous The Handmaiden, yet in my opinion, Decision to Leave is Park’s best cinematic work in his whole filmography. The film consists of Park’s signature element of a sinful human relationship; however, similar to the auteur’s Joint Security Area, this film focuses more on characters’ personal conflicts and inner feelings. I honestly don’t understand this movie, but Eternity and A Day is a straight-up masterpiece in every aspect, one of the best, if not the best, movies ever made. Very poetic, musical and literary, it sings, it speaks, it breaths, it loves. In the final scene, it feels like words and memory were fondling Alexander, letting him enjoy love. It’s a transition to a parallel world, the world of the soul; the body was on the beach, the soul was…

Some people choose to kill to keep their lovers. Some people just want to experience love, to taste it, to lick it. Love in Kim Ki-Duk’s films is very absurd, but given that, so powerful, so memorable. You don’t want to let your lover go away, so you kill him, to keep him in your arms, your memory forever. Once again, good plot by Kim Ki-Duk, and decent cast.
