This was my fourth viewing of this film. On previous watches I felt that George’s arc was redemptive as to where Vernon’s was more tragic. On this watch I feel more that both arcs represent divergent responses to the spectre of carcerality as it effects and is percieved by black people and children respectively. While we don’t explicitly see the police in more than one scene, from the moment of Buddy’s death each following action can read like a both…
Loved Poitier and Carroll’s performances and chemistry. Didn’t like the “back in the states white people help up make things better” propoganda, or the idea that there wouldn’t have been black french people who weren’t US expats playing jazz anywhere? (especially in the context of France’s imperial-colonial history) Not to say that I expect something different of a film from this era of hollywood.
All in all an enjoyable watch though
