The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse ★★★½

Basically amounts to nothing more than Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe yelling at each other for two hours, but they're both so committed and talented that it just manages to work. Obviously there's skill in the filmmaking, and there's a particular unsettling, off kilter mood that Eggers is able to maintain throughout. The story itself could use some work though, as it seems to spin in circles with no clear short term or long term destinations. Because of that, this film could've grown stagnant and fallen apart, but Pattinson and Dafoe carry it in its weakest moments. Somehow they're magnetic to watch even though there's no story and no substance, and the film doesn't even go far enough with certain elements of the story. In other words, not enough making out.

It's decent, whatever. But it's strangely enough not going to be something I remember, for better or for worse, at the end of the year.
