Less effective when it turns its focus to the supporting cast, but as a character study and deep dive into Mads Mikkelsen's Martin, it's top notch. Per usual, Vinterberg's blend of dark comedy, psychological thriller, and character drama results in a fascinating end product, slowly but very deliberately paced, and led by an often muted yet powerful performance by Mikkelsen. The film's nonjudgmental approach is one of its best virtues, but it also is one of its flaws, particularly because this approach prevents us from getting enough of a look at the interior lives of the other characters. There's obviously only limited time and space, but I was a bit impatient to get through certain scenes. Nevertheless, it's another solid film from Vinterberg with an absolutely killer final scene.
