Family tragedy that's never really expounded upon (or even really addressed outside of a couple brief bits of dialogue) set the stage for what initially presents itself as a fight for survival in the unforgiving wilderness. However, once the curtain is pulled back, it becomes a much larger commentary on civilization, culture, and humanity's relationship with the two, both on an individual level as well as societal.
